Planting, Plant Populations and Seeding Rates
Planting Dry Beans
1). Dry beans should be planted when soil temperatures reach a minimum of 52-55 degrees F to germinate. Planting before soil temperatures reach this level could result in reduced plant population.
2). Dry beans should be planted in the May 15th to June 1st time frame. Planting dry beans June 2nd to June 10th may make a crop depending on what mother nature brings during the growing season. Planting dry beans after June 10th is not recommended.
3). A Planting depth of 1.5 to 2 inches is ideal. You want to put the seed into moisture. Planting depth should not exceed 3 to 3.5 inches.
4). Most conventional planting equipment can be used for planting beans. Air drills (that are designed for planting small grain) should be avoided, due to potential of internal damage to seed; i.e. baldheads. Make sure you have you planter set to obtain your desired plant population.
5). Use the proper seed lubricant in the planter box.
6). On air planters with a drum, either tie back the brushes or remove them to prevent damage to the seed.
